two scenarios:

1) you dive into the water and make purposefully for the big rock in the centre. the sun is hot and glistens on the water surface making pretty shapes and shadows on the ever-growing circles made by other divers. the reflection of the sun on the water blinds you sometimes and you hear the fun and laughter but on you go till you touch the rock you are making for. upon reaching it, you climb up and lie on its surface like a lizard in the sun - skin upon rough. almost asleep, not quite, your mind off like a train but everything else still, nothing belying the activity within. when you are warm like a pebble on a beach on a sunny day, you jump back into the water and swim around making discoveries - purple starfish, shadows cast on the water, fishes too small and smooth to catch with bare hands, water that slides through your fingers faster than sand...

2) you dive into the water enjoying the swift and smooth cut of the water surface. there, you surface and look around considering what to do. you see other playing, laughing, splashing, sunbathing... there is so much noise, the sun is so hot, the water so cool. you flounder around a bit... there are so many choices, which one to pick? hmmm.

third thought:

even a sand grain adds up. to make a move away from insularity, sectarianism (and whatever other pretty profound baffling term one uncovers from the irrepressible English language) you have to take that small step. sometimes it is the hardest step to take.

"Why are you not working harder?" screamed the guard at Betsie. "That's nothing but a spoonful of dirt on your shovel."

"I'm sorry," Betsie answered good-naturedly, "but even spoonfuls add up."

Dying in Ravensbruck... would you find the courage to still find humour and truth in it all?
